Goliyon Ki Rasleela “Ram Leela”

Edgy, raunchy, loud, exaggerated, racy, titillating, provocative… all legitimate words to describe it but that would only be telling part of the story; to take a timeless classic, especially a clichéd Shakespearean tragedy, adapt it in the Indian context, dress it like a fantasy, and yet keep the characters earthy and colloquially intriguing takes an artist. May not fit everyone’s definition of entertainment, but I found Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “GKR Ram Leela”, a great way to spend a weekend evening. The movie is not without flaws, but engaging all the same!
The audio-visual medium of cinema is seldom used to its full potential. It takes engaging story telling as from Tarantino, the creative genius of a Steven Spielberg, the magic of Walt Disney, the thrills of Alfred Hitchcock, the sensitivity of Guru Dutt, the simplicity of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the screenplay of Vishal Bhardwaj, or “epic” creativity like David Lean had. SLB seems to be creating his own signature in cinema : “garish art direction laden dramas”. Have to say, I am looking forward to his next already…
Regarding the acting performances, I think Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Supriya Pathak and Richa Chadda stood out… not surprised, how “into the character” Ranveer Singh was; his previous releases have already marked him as “serious potential”, imo. Ranbir Kapoor’s run in the last few years notwithstanding, I think this energetic boy from Bandra is the “dark horse” who will create his own mark in the industry. He’s got it all, people! Tellin’ ya…
Parting thought : SLB should remake “Devdas” with Ranveer Singh as the protagonist only to make it right… Madhuri & Aishwarya did their part, but there was a major casting flaw in the last version. Just saying… wink emoticon
